Fractals are shapes that repeat themselves: zoom in, and you find smaller copies hiding inside. These pictures were made by a program that does one tiny sum, z × z + c, over and over for every pixel, and colours the pixel by how quickly the number grows. Millions of pixels, thousands of loops each!
